THE SEVENTH SEAL – FILM

Seventh Seal, directed by Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman in 1957, follows Antonius Block, a disillusioned medieval knight returning from the Crusades to a plague-ridden homeland, who plays a game of chess against the personification of Death to prolong his life.

Bergman’s work is a direct cinematic manifestation of Sartrean existentialism.

Set against the backdrop of silence from the heavens, the knight wrestles with existential dread, questioning whether life has inherent meaning or if humanity must forge its own significance in the face of mortality. The film serves as a powerful reminder of our limited time on Earth.

Rather than surrendering to paralysis or despair, The Seventh Seal inspires us to live authentically, engage in meaningful human connections, and take full responsibility for our choices while the game continues.
